about us

Hi it's Katie again, and I will tell you about Humpback whales. They are one of the biggest animals in the world, growing to lengths of 40 to 63 feet. Their bodies are mostly black, and the have very long flippers.
I learned that Humpback whales weigh up to be 40 tons. That is about the weight of 40 solid gold bricks. Even though they are huge, they can lift themselves out of the water, this is called breaching. Sometimes, they swim on their backs with both flippers in the air.
Their diet name is an omnivore. That means they eat both plants and meat from other kinds of fish. They eat a lot of plankton and krill because these things are small enough to swallow. "Wait a minute, do you know that whales don't have teeth!" Instead of teeth, they have about 200-400 tiny plates that are like hairs that hang from its jaw. They help catch the food.
All whales are known for noises, but especially the Humpback Whale. The males make the longest sounds, as they travel through the ocean. The songs can last up to 20 minutes and can be heard 20 miles away. "Hey, I think I can hear one now."
Remember that Humpback whales are endangered, that means that there are only a few left on the planet and it is illegal to hunt them. They live in all of the oceans and there are about 25,000 Humpbacks.
All whales go to cold waters to feed and warmer waters to give birth. Humpbacks travel thousands of miles every year. Humpbacks are capable of travelling at 5 miles per hour but, during such a long journey, they average only 1 mile per hour resting along the water.
