Hello, I am Katie and I
will tell you some really interesting about the ghost-like snowy owl.
They are beautiful birds
who live in the Arctic Tundra, and some parts of Greenland, Canada, and
Asia.
I learned that these snowy
owls are diurnal. That means that they are awake day and night. In the
wild, they can live to be up to nine and a half years old. Wow. The group
name is a solitary. If you see a group of them (that would be amazing),
tell your mom or dad, "Hey, a solitary of snowy owls."
Males have white feathers
and females have white feathers with brown spots. The color helps them
hide in the snow. Snowy owls communicate with each other with a series
of shrieks and hoots. They tend to live by themselves except when mating.
The mother lays three to eleven eggs in a clutch. The baby's skin color
is brownish-white. The predators of the eggs are wolves, foxes and even
other birds.
A snowy owl is a very patient
hunter. In the flash of an eye, boom, you can be knocked out. The birds
have very good eyes and can see their prey easily, even if it is hiding
in a tree or bushes.
For food, they like to eat
lemmings. Lemmings are small rodents that look like hamsters. Snowy owls
also like to eat rabbits, birds and fish. The snowy owl has adapted very
well to its cold environment. To keep its blood warm enough, the snowy
owl has to eat a lot more food than an animal that lives in a warm environment.
